    Production of highly excited states in microwave ionization of Rydberg atoms

    Résumé :
    Ionization of ground state atoms by intense laser pulses results in roughly 10% of the atoms being left in very highly excited states, ones which would easily be ionized by static fields orders of magnitude weaker than the laser field. Recent experiments with microwave fields have shown the same phenomenon ; atoms in much higher lying states than the initial state survive the microwave pulse. The high lying states are the result of resonant microwave multiphoton transitions, as shown by laser excitation spectra with pulsed and continuous microwave fields.
