    The NV-centre in diamond : from stimulated emission to NV fluorescence in detonation nanodiamonds

    Résumé : I will discuss recent results from our group in the area of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) fluorescence. We have recently demonstrated stimulated emission from NV-centres in bulk diamond. The experimental results will be presented and discussed in the context of NV charge-state dynamics.

    It is well known that the NV emission decreases in the presence of external magnetic fields. We show that at low excitation intensities the NV fluorescence quantum yield is enhanced at magnetic field intensities above 100 mT by up to ∼7% with respect to the fieldfree case.

    A challenge for the use of fluorescent HPHT nanodiamonds in biological applications is their comparatively large size of > 30 nm. Most NV centres in diamond particles < 10 nm in size, such as detonation nanodiamonds (DND), are generally assumed to be too close to the diamond surface to be optically active. We find bright NV fluorescence from DND particles and explore the effect of the particles’ surface functionalization on their fluorescence properties.
